Are Vehicles Kept in the Garage Covered under a Homeowners Policy?
Since we specialize in Classic Car Insurance and attend many car shows, I have been told many times by Classic Car owners that their vehicle that is kept in the garage is covered by their Homeowner’s Insurance Policy.
The short answer to this statement is false. Homeowner’s Insurance Policies do not cover a vehicle kept in the garage.
In the Homeowner’s Insurance Policy Form under the section Property Not Covered: Motor Vehicles are listed.
A vehicle in or out of garage must be insured under an Auto Insurance Policy in order to be covered for any kind of loss.
I can see where this misconception comes from because property inside your home is covered. But as with every insurance policy there are limitations and exclusions. Plus, Homeowner’s Insurance Policies like all other Insurance Policies are not easy to read and understand. This why I think there is a lot of perception from the side of the Insured.
This where an Insurance Agent can help you with what is covered under an Auto or Home Insurance Policy.
